LURING MURRAY COD

Murray Cod are found throughout the Murray and Darling River Catchments. They are scattered through the rivers of New England, NSW and parts of the south eastern coast to southern Queensland.

Murray Cod are territorial aggressive feeders and will attack lures when they travel through their territory. Murray Cod will attack diving lures, surface lures, bladed runners and even flies.

The best time to fish for Murray Cod are early morning and late afternoon or with the peaks and troughs of the barometric curve. When lure fishing for cod, concentrate around rocks, logs, deep undercuts and river narrows. Most anglers are frightened to cast lures around snags for fear of losing them, but like it or not this is where the Murray Cod reside.

Luring Murray Cod is about persistance and consistency. Choose a lure that runs at a depth that is suitable for the type of fishing, e.g. river or dams. A fast retrieve barely works on cod. A steady retrieve or a jerking start stop motion is most effective, as it will imitate a small bait fish feeding or one that is wounded.

Lure size does not matter that much, although for impoundments & deep holes in rivers usually bigger deep diving lures work best. Lures that bang and rattle around snags and the bottom will give better results. When fishing in rivers, it is a good idea to see what small insects, small fish are around, then try and match this with a similar lure. Remember, that if you do catch a few Murray Cod, make sure that they are legal (50cm or bigger), try to limit your bag to one at the most, so we can continue to conserve this great species.

If you have other successful techniques, send an e-mail and they will be added to this page.
